Homework Programs

  1. Sustained Silent Study: this runs every Wednesday afternoon afternoon from 3.45 until 7.00 pm, with a 15 minute break halfway through. It is open to any student undertaking a VCE Unit 3 and 4 sequence. Students are supervised by a (volunteer) teacher. They work in complete silence for the two 90 minute blocks. It allows students to develop the self-discipline needed to commit to sustained periods of silent study, and prepares them for examination conditions in which they need to sustain concentration for at least 90mins or more. Students need to commit to attending for any given week in pastoral on Tuesday mornings. They do not have to attend each week, although about 10 choose to do this. Each session is attended by 20-30 students on average.
  1. The ARVO group – for students in Years 7-10. This also runs Wednesdays after school in the St Pat’s campus library. It provides students with one-on-one assistance with school work. Currently senior students are working with younger students. This initiative only began in Term 2 this year and is slowly building up in numbers. Rosie Davidson and Jacinta Werner have more info about this group.
  1. Home-work help: this runs at Sion in the Library on Tuesday afternoons for one hour after school. A member of the study skills staff supervises the group. It gives the students access to library and computer facilities after school, in addition to teacher assistance, to assist them in completion of homework tasks and assignments. This is particularly useful for students who do not have computer or internet access at home, or who find it difficult to concentrate at home, or who need a bit of extra help with these tasks.
  1. Sion Computer rooms: three lunchtimes a week the computer rooms are available for student use to complete schoolwork such as research, homework or assignments. Computer access is supervised and is restricted solely to schoolwork ie no games, music or video downloads. Again it enables those students without computer or internet access at home to work on assignments and homework using this technology.
