Achievements
CAS Basketball:
This year we entered both Junior and Intermediate teams in the Catholic All Schools Basketball Regional Day. Held in Traralgon, the day was attended by Nagle College, Lavalla College, St Joseph’s Ferntree Gully, Santa Maria College Northcote, Aquinas College Ringwood and ourselves.
Our Junior Girls finished the preliminary games undefeated and faced a challenging Lavalla Team in the final. The girls worked hard and won a very close final by 5 points.
Our Junior Boys played won their early preliminary games quite well, until they were decisively beaten by 27 points by St Joseph’s. The boys met that same team again in the final and with some careful preparation and some strategic defensive were able to win their final by 2 points.
Our Intermediate boys remained undefeated during the preliminary games and they played out a very close final against Aquinas College Ringwood by 2 points.
Our Intermediate Girls team looked good early on and then came up against a highly skilled Lavalla Team. The girls won all games on the day apart from their preliminary game against Lavalla and the final against the same team.
The Junior Boys and Girls and Intermediate Boys all go on to compete at the State Finals in Melbourne on Thursday 8th May.
We would like to thank all the parents who came along on the day for supporting and assisting with scoring, and we welcome them again when we travel to Melbourne on Thursday.
MARIST NETBALL
The Catholic College Sale Marist Netballers this week competed in the Annual Carnival hosted this year by Notre Dame College Shepparton.
The girls competed against 16 other Marist Schools from Across Australia in the three day Carnival. Following the opening ceremony our team began their Pool Games strongly but finished the round with one win and two losses. This placed us in the Challenge Division for the carnival.
Our Girls worked hard during all games to finish the Preliminary Rounds with six wins and one loss. Marist Regional College Burnie proved to be the other main contender for the Challenge Trophy and in a very tight round game; we were defeated by them by 2 goals.
It was to be Burnie that we met in the Challenge Final and in another very close encounter, the girls ran away to win 34 to 25.
There were many highlights during the Carnival with Ashleigh Robbins and Julia Allan both being awarded player of the day honours and Julia Allan being named Catholic College Sale Most Valuable Player for the Carnival. A further individual honour was awarded to Julia in the form of selection in the Highly Recommended Team, the top 24 players at the Carnival.
Marist Basketball:
This year’s Carnival was very hosted by St Augustine’s College Cairns and we were not let down by the friendly and hospitable staff and volunteers of the College.
The Girls team achieved great success, finishing the preliminary rounds undefeated. They met Lavalla College Traralgon in the final and in a fabulous display of courage and skill, the were defeated by 3 points.
The Boys team didn’t have as much success as previous years and were seeded 3rd going into the preliminary rounds. Although competitive, we found ourselves in the ‘plate’ round for day 2 (the bottom 8) and without much luck at all, finished by playing off for 15th place.
Individual “Most Valuable Player” Awards went to Kate Bond and Jack Johnstone. Kate, along with Gemma Skeen were named as members of the Marist 5 – the top 5 players of the carnival.
We farewell two long serving players this year, Sam McLaverty and Kristy Glover. Both of these players have been part of the Marist Basketball since they began playing in Year 9. This year, both Sam and Kristy were captains of their teams and over the years have represented the College with leadership and courage. We thank them for their positive contributions to Basketball over the past four years and wish them well in the future.
Matt Tulloch:
Matt Tulloch recently competed at the Pony Club of Victoria State Show Jumping Championships held at Elmore on the 30th of March. Matt competed in the A Grade Level in a State Championship for the first time on his mount "Snowy River Mystique". He rode very competitively and enjoyed the competition, but unfortunately missed out on a place. Matt has been affiliated with the Briagolong Pony Club for the last three years. Well done Matt, this is an excellent achievement!
Damien Sutton:
Damien Sutton (7E) recently represented Gippsland at the Country Victoria Soccer Championships in Echuca. Damien, who plays in defence for the Under 14 Gippsland team, trains three times a week and plays for local Soccer team Sale United. Damien and his team competed against teams from Country Victoria and also in their competition were the Under 17 Girls State Soccer Team.
Damien and his team won all 7 of their matches by varying margins including a 13 – 0 opening game.

Another successful swimming carnival was held this year in fine weather conditions. Attendance and participation was high with our senior students leading the way and participating in what was to be their last swimming carnival at the College.
There were many impressive performances throughout the day which resulted in numerous records being broken. Kim Ventrella was a stand-out performer again taking honors in the memorial events for the fourth year in a row, as well as being crowned Age Champion. The following students are also acknowledged for their fine performances throughout the day resulting in them being recognized as Age Champions for 2008:
Year 9: Tom Warry & Marnie Shears
Year 10: Nick Bennett & Hannah Warry
Year 11: Patrick Jones & Kim Ventrella
Year 12: Jason Kent & Prue May
The overall house competition saw Raphaela house in the lead for the entire day. Raphaela house has shown it is a strong force in the pool having dominated the St. Pat’s swimming carnival for the past 4 consecutive years. The final house placings at the conclusion of the day was as follows:
Raphaela = 790
Daly = 709
Theodore = 701
